The 1970s

The 1970s was the founding decade for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, but it was also the end of Mudcrutch.

In 1976, the self-titled debut album was released. And in 1978, their second album You're Gonna Get It came out.

These albums made Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers famous in the United Kingdom, but back home in the US, they were not nearly as popular. Hearing "Breakdown" or "American Girl" on the radio was something special.

And then, in 1979, something magical happened.

They broke through with their #2 album, Damn the Torpedoes in 1979 bringing with it a world tour and international fame.

The 1980s

The 1980s were some of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers busiest years. But it wouldn't be successful for just the Heartbreakers and their collaborations with Bob Dylan. During the mid to late 80s, Tom Petty found himself a member of one of the world's most illustrious supergroups: the Traveling Wilburys including Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, Jeff Lynne, and George Harrison. Petty would also collaborate with Jeff Lynne for his very first solo album, Full Moon Fever.

The 1990s

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' biggest single would come in the 1990s: "Mary Jane's Last Dance" wasn't even meant to be included in the Greatest Hits album; after all, it wasn't a hit. It had never even been recorded, let alone released. Despite Tom Petty not wanting to include a new song on the album, the record company insisted he write a new song for the album, which ironically became their biggest single.

The 2000s

Always evolving as musicians and artists, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers stood together as a strong band and image of American Rock 'n' Roll music. In 2002, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

In 2006, they celebrated their 30th anniversary with a massive tour and in 2008, they played the most famous musical intermission in pop culture: the Super Bowl Halftime Show for  Super Bowl XLII. 

The 2010s

2010 saw Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers first dedicated blues album, Mojo and many tours.

In 2014, their album Hypnotic Eye became their first Billboard #1 album. After 38 years, they reached their well deserved number one. If not for Pink Floyd's The Wall strong at number one in 1979, it is likely Damn the Torpedoes, the Heartbreakers' number two album, would have hit number one.
